Farm Park and Community Center Project Approved
By Judith Wellner
At its Nov. 21 meeting, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors approved the proposed final conceptual master plan for the Farm Neighborhood Park and Community Center project. This followed a September recommendation from the Parks Commission that proposed the Board adopt the park’s current plans.

The Farm is a 39-unit apartment complex located at the northwest corner of Soquel Drive and Cunnison Lane. It has been serving the community as a low-income housing establishment since the early ‘90s.

According to plans, the vacant space adjacent to the complex will be turned into a recreational area. The master plan calls for the building of a nature trail, neighborhood park areas, picnic areas, a basketball court, a skateboard area, a dog park, community gardens, and a community center with meeting rooms and an upstairs art studio.

Plans incorporated a large amount of community input via public meetings where participants worked with site maps and cut-outs to develop conceptual plans. The community building was designed to replicate the style of the nearby apartments.

The apartments were built by the Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition, a non-profit affordable housing developer, with the help of the County’s Redevelopment Agency. The Redevelopment Agency purchased the vacant land with plans to develop a park and community center 15 years ago. Now those plans are becoming reality.

Construction is likely to begin in 2008.

Once the building process is complete, the Redevelopment Agency will transfer the site over to the County of Santa Cruz Department of Parks, Open Space and Cultural Services.
