Head of Instagram – Instagram says Android is now better than iOS

Not many things in the tech world can be as polarizing as Android vs. iOS.

Both sides have some dedicated fans who will fight tooth and nail to disprove the other. In fact, one notable person who supports the view that Android is now better than iOS is the head of Instagram and Thread, Adam Mosseri.

Responding to a Post on Topics by Marquis Brownlee aka MKBHD inviting people to write their — unpopular — tech opinions, Mosseri replied, “Android is now better than iOS.” Mosseri’s view has sparked widespread discussion online, in places like the Reddit community, as people tend to have very strong opinions on the matter.

Although his treatment of Android as a platform was controversial to many, his short message did not clarify or give any indication of what exactly changed his mind. Being responsible for two of the biggest social networking apps, was he speaking from a developer’s point of view? Or is it the changes Google has made to improve the Android experience that excite him as a user? It may be a result of the recent dispute between Mark Zuckerberg and Apple over App Store policies and app tracking restrictions that have severely affected Meta Ads’ business model.

In terms of user experience on each platform, the current stable version of iOS 16 has a lot to offer, with no shortage of stability issues while iOS 17 brings many new features. On the other hand, Android 14 betas added many improvements such as new lock screen customizations, charging indicators for the predictive back gesture, and drag and drop for text and images.

However, Instagram itself for a long time preferred its iOS app over its Android counterpart because it is known that initially Instagram didn’t even have an Android app. This doesn’t seem to have changed with themes either despite Mosseri’s preference for Android. A big new thread update has been rolling out this week for iOS with a lot of new features that users have been asking for, but there’s no word yet on when the same features will come to the Android version.
