iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro owners are already complaining about dwindling battery capacity – iPhone

Some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro owners have been expressing complaints lately that are reminiscent of the “Batterygate” days that in less than a year of operation, their devices are “reporting” more battery degradation than expected.

Sam Kohl from the AppleTrack website wrote on Twitter In July, the available battery capacity of the iPhone 14 Pro he’s already using dropped to 90%. The capacity degradation came much faster than the previous iPhones he’d had, and on the Twitter thread, we’re noticing that many other people are sharing the same experience.

Sam Kohl then went on to post a video about the problem, saying that he finds it hard to recommend the phone especially given its cost ($999 in the US). Officially, Apple states that iPhone series batteries should retain up to 80% of their original capacity for 500 full charge cycles. The iPhone 15 series is expected to be announced soon, and according to recent rumors, the devices are expected to feature batteries with approximately 10-18% larger capacity compared to the current devices. However, Sam Cole is not the only one who has experienced such a deterioration in his iPhone battery. Senior Technology Columnist for The Wall Street Journal On The Verge, Joanna Stern, recently wrote in her newsletter that her iPhone 14 Pro has a battery capacity of 88%. The Verge columnists and editors report mixed experiences: In two cases, iPhone 14 Pro batteries dropped to 93% and 91%, while in a third the battery was at 97%.

In the past, it took at least two years of use to see what kind of battery degradation Sam Cole was reporting. This includes the cost of iPhone battery replacement. It’s somewhat more expensive to replace the battery on the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro after the one-year US warranty (assuming you don’t have AppleCare or another service plan). Last year, the price in the US increased by $30 from $69 in the previous series of devices. A battery health monitoring feature for iPhones was added in the same iOS 11.3 update that allowed users to disable the annoying performance throttling that was at the core of the so-called “Batterygate”. Although Apple claimed this was a measure to protect iPhones from old batteries, it ultimately resulted in an expensive settlement to deal with lawsuits.
