WEATHER: Cold invasion with storms, snow and fall – new emergency bulletin

The weather shows rapid deterioration with storms, snowfall and temperature drop being the main characteristics.

According to an updated emergency weather warning, a low pressure system with frontal activity named Bettina by the Central Mediterranean Weather Service will hit the country.

It is expected to cause bad weather over the weekend (25-11-23 and 26-11-23), with very gale-force winds in most parts of the country and locally heavy rain and thunderstorms mainly in western, northern and eastern insular Greece.

Snow will also occur in the continental highlands and semi-mountainous areas of Thrace and Macedonia.

Temperatures will drop significantly from Saturday night into Sunday, with 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in Ionian and continental areas, and 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in other areas.

A. Very stormy winds are expected:
A. Saturday afternoon to the west, initially SW 7 to 8 and quickly NW 8 to 9 Beaufort.
B. Saturday afternoon in the east, initially southwest 7 to 8 gradually local 9 Beaufort and gradually in the evening from the northwest with the same intensity.

Macedonia, Thrace

Snowfall will occur in the hills from evening onwards, but semi-mountainous areas at an altitude of 500-700 meters will also experience snowfall.
Wind: Southwest 5 to 6 and East 6 to 7 Beaufort. 6 to 8 northwesterly winds from the afternoon and west and 9 Beaufort locally in Central Macedonia.
Temperature: 09 to 18 degrees Celsius and 3 to 4 degrees lower in western Macedonia. It will register a significant fall from evening onwards.

Ionian Islands, Epiros, West Styria, West Peloponnese
Weather: Cloudy with rain and strong storm at places. Events will weaken in the evening. Snowfall will occur over hilly areas, mainly central and northern areas from evening onwards.
Wind: Southwest 5 to 6, first afternoon 7 to 8 and brisk northwest inland 9 Beaufort.
Temperature: 10 to 19 degrees Celsius and 4 to 5 degrees lower in the interior of Epirus. From the afternoon and north, there will be a noticeable drop in the north.

Eastern Styria, Evia, Eastern Peloponnese
Weather: Some clouds increased at times with localized rain and scattered storms. From the afternoon, the effects will be temporarily stronger in the southern Peloponnese, and from the evening they will weaken. Snowfall will occur in the hills from evening onwards.
Wind: Southwest 5 to 6 gradually strengthening to 6 to 7 and east and south inland to 8 Beaufort. Northwest wind 6 to 8 Beaufort in the evening.

Temperature: 11 to 18 degrees Celsius. It will register a significant fall from evening onwards.
